The Classification of Native American as Mulattoes in Anglo-North America

AMERICAN-AFRICAN INTERACTION IN NORTH AMERICA: AN AREA OF SCHOLARLY NEGLECT

Contemporary scholarly and popular literature in the United States has largely 5 ignored the significance of widespread Native American ancestry among Afroamericans and, also, of African ancestry among many Native groups. The consequences of this neglect are far reaching, and tliis is especially true in relation to studies of the evolution of music, folk tales, social organization, and other aspects of culture.

In a similar manner, the existence of a large group of 'Red-Black People’, part-American and part-African, has been largely overlooked-and, in fact, such people have been usually classified as ‘Black’ by both scholars and North American statutes. Still ftirther, the former existence of comparatively large numbers of Native American slaves has also been ignored generally, with great consequence for both early Native and Afroamerican history.
