African Slave Trade Map 1500-1870 and Narrative
After claiming territories in the New World, Europeans looked for profitable ways of developing their holdings. In North America, landowners growing popular cash crop such as tobacco, rice, and indigo turned to the use of African slaves. Millions of Africans from diverse cultural groups were sold to slave traders on the West Coast of Africa between 1600 and 1800. In all, some 400,000 Africans survived the voyage to British North America during the duration of the slave trade. In addition, millions more were transported to plantations in Latin American and the Caribbean.
